Wiper blade was 1st envisioned by Mary Anderson back in 1902. She was travelling in her car when she noticed that the driver had to stop every now and then to clear the snow from the windshield. She then filed a patent for a blade that can do the same from inside of the car using a handle and the rest is history.
Technology
Wiper blade technology has been developed a lot through these years. There are now 2 types of blades most commonly used, the Conventional blade and the Flat (Soft) Blade. The Conventional blade has a metal frame on which the rubber is attached. This blade was very convenient when the windshields were flat. The reason being is that conventional blade has only 6 to 8 touch points on the windshield. They are still effective for most windshields and widely used.
A Flat or a Soft wiper blade had a single durable beam with end caps which houses the rubber. This beam, unlike the conventional metal frame, would easily curve on to any windshield type and provided multiple contact points on the windshield. So evidently, the flat wiper blade cleans the windshield more effectively, even at higher speeds.
Although there is no metric as to when a wiper blade is to be changed, some studies suggest that it should be changed in 6 to 12 months depending on the usage. However, it is necessary to change when one finds the below problems with the blade:
Blade rubber wears out and leave trails (streaks) on the windshield.
Squeaky noise when the blades are in motion.
Damaged wiper beam which doesn’t contact the windshield completely.
